Choosing Keywords When You Are Doing Research

Once you've decided on a topic for your research paper, next you'll need to choose keywords. Library databases search differently than Google. In Google, you can put in questions and long phrases, but in library databases you'll need to choose keywords. Here's a short video from another library that explains choosing keywords:

Need to Pick a Topic for Your Research Paper?

Studies say these are the top 2 most difficult things in doing research: 1) Picking a Topic; 2) Choosing Keywords. If you're having trouble picking a topic, go to the library's Database List http://libguides.grossmont.edu/databases and click on "Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center." Once you're in that database, from the black menu bar, find "Browse Issues." Look at the issues and find a topic that excites you. Click on the topic link and you'll find lots of resources all in one place: Featured Viewpoints, Academic Journals, Statistics and Images. For the next post, we'll deal with "Choosing Keywords."

Group Study Rooms

Need a group study room? The Library has them! There are group study rooms on the 1st floor of the library--those are first-come-first-served. Check those out at the Circulation Desk. For group study rooms located on the 2nd floor, you can reserve for a particular day and time. Contact the Media Desk to reserve those study rooms. Some study rooms have PCs and TVs in them. You can also check out a laptop or a voice recorder from the Media Desk. There's even a single-person study room, for distraction-free studying.
